Oasis burst onto the British music scene in 1994 with the seminal album ‘Definitely Maybe’. Full of Mancunian swagger and confidence, the album arguably holds the number one spot for all of Britpop. It thrust the Gallagher brothers into mainstream popular culture. Liam’s enigmatic frontman persona proved that lack of talent can be more than made up for with pure confidence. Despite falling short of the vocal range and skill of some of his contemporaries, his voice is the perfect fit for brother Noels song writing, and the iconic sound would never have been possible without him. Noels talent for song writing stands up against any one from any period, including the legendary Lennon and McCartney, from which the band took so much influence. ‘Definitely Maybe’ was famously almost impossible to produce, and almost never made it out of the studio. They went through two different producers and the project was nearly dropped, before Owen Morris was drafted in. It was clearly meant to be. Morris set about re-recording the album and was able to perfectly encapsulate the bands on-stage sound and persona. The result is a masterpiece of mid-nineties British music, and defined the Cool Britannia era, rescuing the UK’s reputation as the worlds leading creative force. Noels talents on the guitar inspired a generation, and has arguably ensured this reputation was never put in doubt again, with a long list of contemporary artists citing him as the main reason they picked up an instrument in the first place. Every song is a classic, and it is impossible to pick one above all the others. You are simply urged to listen to it in its entirety and appreciate this wonderful masterpiece for yourself.
